FAQ

Why is The Smile Outlet different?

We all know that having a smile that you’re proud of can make all the difference in the world, but how much will it cost you?  Typical orthodontic treatment on the Gold Coast ranges from $6,000 – $10,000 which quite frankly is unaffordable for a large number of people.  Our mission is to provide the Gold Coast with access to affordable orthodontic care. We believe in transparency which is why we try and be as open and honest with people about our pricing and services.

How do we keep our prices so low?

We have designed our whole practice around making it more affordable for families.  We do this by:

  • Only treating mild to moderate cases.
  • Finishing our braces and aligner cases fast (in about 6-12 months)
  • Keeping our orthodontic services simple.
  • Streamlining our systems and treatment.
  • Cutting out the middle-man.

What are the treatment Costs?

To keep it simple, The Smile Outlet provides 3 main treatment options with an all inclusive fixed price that is as much as 60% less than our competitors.  This means there are no hidden extra costs for things like xrays, clean, ongoing appointments. Even your first set of retainers, which would often cost an additional $400-$600, are included at not extra charge.  These prices are:

  • Braces – $3,830. (starting from)
  • Aligners – $4,830. (starting from)
  • Expanders – $1,590

But in order for this to be successful and sustainable long term, we need to do lots of cases! So make sure you tell all your friends and family to come and see us. 😉

What are the payment options?

At The Smile Outlet, you can choose to either pay for the treatment up front to secure the lowest price, or you can put the treatment on a payment plan up to 24 months using Humm. This third party company Humm does have some fees associated with using their services but there is no interest.

Will I be eligible for a payment plan?

Yes.  At The Smile Outlet, we guarantee eligibility for a payment plan, so you can stress less about whether or not a finance company will take you on. We do require a 20% deposit but with prices like ours, that deposit is very affordable.

Can I claim a rebate from my health fund?

Yes, as long as your level of cover includes orthodontics.  We can either do that in the clinic at the time if you have your card available, or we can provide you with an invoice with all relevant details to claim it back from your health fund.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes, we offer a Smile Guarantee. Not only do we guarantee the lowest price on the Gold Coast and guarantee finance, but we also guarantee you’ll see results in 6 months or less. You have nothing to lose!

What is your Smile Guarantee?

We are the only orthodontic practice on the Gold Coast offering a Smile Guarantee. So what is it? It has 3 parts.

We guarantee to be the CHEAPEST braces on the Gold Coast for a comparable product and service. If you find another practice offering you braces, aligners or expander plate on the Gold Coast for a better price and it’s the same as what we offer, we’ll match it.

We also offer a guarantee to FINANCE a payment plan. We use Humm for finance solutions and if you don’t qualify for their finance, as long as you can put down 20% of the total treatment fee, we will work out another way so that you can use a payment plan, guaranteed.

We also guarantee that with braces and aligner treatment, you’ll see RESULTS in 6 months or less. So you have nothing to lose!

Dentist or Orthodontist?

To treat someone with braces or aligners, you need to be a registered dental practitioner. Good news for you is that the clinical team at TSO are registered practitioners and have been working in orthodontics for over 50 years collectively. Our practitioners are registered as Dentists and Hygienists and have all the necessary skills, experience, licences and qualifications to treat your smile. They have treated thousands of smiles using braces, aligners and expanders. We even have team members who are specialist orthodontists registered overseas, so you can be confident that you are in good hands. Plus, we choose to only treat mild to moderate cases at our office so if the case is complex, we may refer you to a trusted local orthodontist. But most cases are pretty straight forward and you will get straighter teeth and healthier bites at a great price, and that’s something worth smiling about.

Braces

How do braces work?

Braces are an orthodontic tool that uses a combination of metal brackets and wires to gradually straighten teeth and improve the way your teeth bite together. After your consultation, brackets will be bonded to your teeth and wires put into those brackets to start moving the teeth. You will visit our clinic every 6-10 weeks for adjustments and check-ups until your teeth are nice and straight. Some patients will require elastics to help with the way your teeth bite together.

What if I need elastics?

Elastics are small rubber bands that attach from your top teeth to the lower teeth. They help the brackets and wires apply extra force to move the teeth and bite into a better position. If you require elastics, the better you wear them, the better the result will be. Keep in mind that some things will limit the improvement of a bite including age, genetics, skeletal formation and how diligent the patient is wearing elastics.

What type of braces do we use?

There are two main types of bracket systems. Conventional braces, which you are probably familiar with, have coloured ties on the brackets. These coloured ties get full of bacteria, lose their elasticity and are often more painful and take longer than the newer braces systems. This newer style of braces, called self-ligating brackets, is what we use here at The Smile Outlet. They are smaller, faster, more comfortable and require fewer appointments making it more convenient for you and your family. That means less time out of school and work.

What happens if I break my braces?

Accidents happen and you are bound to break off a bracket here and there. Normally you would expect 1-2 breakages throughout treatment so just call us and arrange an appointment as soon as you know something might be broken. Please don’t just wait until your next appointment. Breakages add time to your treatment plan so it’s important we know immediately. If you experience more than the standard breakage rates (1-2)  we may need to charge for repairs and no one wants that. So make sure you pay attention to your braces and follow the guidelines, particularly with regard to eating.

What food should I avoid when I have braces?

We will give you clear instructions on what to avoid eating while you have braces but you should avoid anything sticky, nutty, hard or chewy. For example – No chips, popcorn, toffee, muesli bars, chewing gum etc.

Do I need retainers at the end of braces?

Yes, see the ‘Retainer’ section in our FAQs.

Aligners

What are Clear Aligners?

Our aligners are thin, clear plastic removable trays worn in a sequence to gradually straighten your teeth at a fraction of the cost of Invisalign or other traditional teeth straightening options like braces.

We use the latest technology to scan your teeth and create a 3D model. This 3D model is used by our team of registered dental practitioners to design your new smile. Then you wear your clear aligners for 22 hours a day to gently and carefully straighten your teeth.

Clear aligners have been successfully used for more than 20 years and with millions of patients around the world. So yes, it works.  You can get started by completing our online assessment or book in for a scan at our scanning location in Varsity Lakes. Get Started Here

How do I know that TSO aligners will work for me?

All candidates at The Smile Outlet undergo a comprehensive assessment, including X-ray, 3D scans and consultation with our clinical team to determine if they are suitable for treatment. TSO clear aligners are not suitable for everyone, but during the assessment process our qualified dental practitioners will determine if you are a suitable. If you are not a suitable candidate for aligners, we will discuss braces and other options to help you get the smile you’re after.

How do clear aligners work?

You start with a consultation to determine if you are suitable. Then we take 3D scan of our your teeth. Then on a computer,  all the tooth movements are carefully designed. You then wear a series of clear plastic aligners in a sequence to gradually straighten your teeth. Each aligner gently moves the teeth into the position designed on the computer. Each aligner is worn for around 2 weeks and then changed to the next set (up to 25 aligners) until your teeth are in their final positions.

As long as you wear your aligners for the recommended 22 hours per day, you will keep on track and within months, your new smile will start to appear.

What are aligners made of?

Clear aligners are made of smooth, high quality BPA-free plastic. If worn correctly, the aligners won’t irritate your mouth.

How invisible are clear aligners?

It’s hard to believe, but most people won’t even know you’re wearing them. They are virtually invisible. If you’re concerned about your aligners getting in the way of that perfect selfie or a special occasion, pop them out for a moment and put them back in after.

Can I use aligners even if I have crowns, implants, bridges or missing teeth?

There are some instances where this treatment option may not be suitable. We assess each and every smile to make sure we design the right solution for you. As a first step, complete the online assessment and if suitable, book a 3D scan at our practice. A dental practitioner oversees every case and will help determine if treatment is suitable for your circumstances. But we can’t move implants or bridges.

What happens if I need help during treatment?

Every step of the process comes with step by step information to make treatment smooth and simple. We have a specialised customer care team available to assist with everything you need (care@smileoutlet.com.au). With millions of clear aligner cases completed around the world, the process is refined and quite easy to follow. It is just a matter of wearing the aligners for the prescribed amount of time and using chewies.

Is there a minimum age limit?

Yes, we currently only offer our aligners to those who are 14 years and older. In our experience, kids are teens are better suited to braces, but there are some exceptions. Let us know if you definitely want aligners for your child and we will try and accommodate.

Will I experience any pain or discomfort during treatment?

Each patient will have different oral sensitivity, however there may be some discomfort initially as you begin each treatment stage of aligners as your mouth becomes used to having the aligners move your teeth. This discomfort typically only lasts a few days and is really a good indication that the aligners are doing their job.

Do I have to wear the clear aligners all day, every day and even when I sleep?

Yes.  In order to achieve your new smile, you need to wear your aligners for 22 hours per day, including while you sleep.  Wearing them as prescribed is key to getting the smile you’ve always wanted.

When should I remove my clear aligners?

You should remove your aligners before eating, and before drinking, with the exception of cool water. Just make sure you pop them back in when you are done. And in case you are wondering, you can brush and floss each morning and night. During the day, a swish of water before putting your aligners back in is sufficient.

Can I wear my clear aligners when I play sports?

The clear aligners are very durable and will support almost all activities including sport. However, if you are engaged in an activity that would normally require a mouthguard, we would recommend replacing your aligners with a mouthguard during that activity.  Just remember to pop them back in when you’re done.

What happens if I haven’t worn my aligners 22 hours per day as recommended?

If you are not wearing your aligners as recommended, you may need to go back to a previous set of aligners to get you back on track. If you fail to wear your aligners as recommended for prolonged periods, you may find your treatment has to be stopped and a new treatment plan created. This will result in additional costs, but the best way to avoid getting off course is to follow our instructions closely use by wearing your aligners 22 hours per day and using your chewie as directed.

What happens if my clear aligner doesn’t fit properly?

If you experience any difficulty during treatment, please contact our customer care team for further advice (care@smileoutlet.com.au). It is important that you contact us immediately and continue to wear an aligner that does fit until we can rectify the issue.

What happens if I damage or lose my clear aligners?

If you lose or damage your aligner, the first step is to contact us immediately. It is important to keep all of your aligners – even after you have worn them in case you need to go back a step. It is important to always been wearing aligners once treatment has commenced. Don’t let them go off-track.  Replacement aligners cost $99 and take up to 2-3 weeks to manufacture and ship.

If the damage is due to a manufacturing fault, you will not be charged for the replacement of faulty aligners.

Do I need a retainer after treatment is completed?

Yes, see the ‘retainer’ section in the FAQ’s.

Expander

What is an expander?

An expander is a device that is placed in a child’s mouth which takes advantage of their normal growth and development to increase the amount of space they have for their teeth to come in.

Does my child need an expander?

Expanders have a variety of benefits that could be suitable for a wide range of young patients.  These include increasing the width of the arch, reduce crowding, minimising crossbites, reduce the severity of impacted teeth and ultimately reducing the need for extensive orthodontic treatment as they age.  Diagnosing the need for an expander is best done by one of our dental professionals at a free consult.

What age should my child be to have an expander?

Expanders are most effective on children aged 7-11.

Retainers

Do I need to wear retainers after treatment?

Teeth move before, during and even after orthodontic treatment. This includes after having braces, aligners or palatal expanders. The only way to stop teeth moving and going crooked again is to wear retainers. If worn correctly, retainers generally hold the teeth where they are and stop them from moving back. Wearing your retainers at night long term will ensure you maintain your smile for the long term.  One set of removable retainers are included in your treatment plan. Bonded wire retainers are an excellent upgrade to help back-up your plastic removable retainers.

Are there different types of retainers?

Yes.  There are two main types of retainers.  Plastic retainers which you typically wear at night time, and fixed retainers which are essentially strong thin wires glued to the back of your teeth and are there permanently.  The most effective retainers are a combination of plastic removable retainers and permanent wire retainers. We offer both options at The Smile Outlet.

How long do retainers last?

They typically about 12 months, depending on how well they are looked after.  But they can get lost or become dirty after wearing them nightly for a while and not cleaning regularly so you will need replacements at some point.

How much does a replacement retainer cost?

Your first set of plastic removable retainers is included as part of your treatment. But retainers get lost, broken, eaten by the dog or just worn out, and replacement aligners cost $145 per arch.  What’s worse than the cost though is that kids, to avoid getting into trouble, will often hide the fact that they’ve lost or broken their retainers from their parents until it’s too late and their teeth have moved.  That’s why we have come up with an affordable way to protect your new smile with our Smile Protection Plan.

What is the Smile Protection Plan?

A set of plastic removable retainers is included in every treatment plan. If you wear these retainers each night, you don’t need anything else. However, we find that some people don’t wear the retainers as they should which is why we recommend a wire retainer. A bonded wire retainer can help keep the teeth straight if you ever lose or forget to wear your plastic retainers. This cost is $695.

Will my teeth move back to pre-treatment appearance?

Teeth naturally move over time, however by wearing your retainers, this prevents teeth from moving and holds them in place so your new smile is preserved. However, if you don’t follow the recommended use or don’t wear your retainers, it is possible your teeth will move again. Having a bonded retainer can help support your retention program.

What is a bonded or permanent retainer?

A bonded or permanent retainer is a small wire glued behind the back of your front 6 teeth. This wire, in combination with your night time plastic retainers gives you the best chance of keeping your teeth straight. This wire is not included in your standard treatment plan. It costs an additional $695 for a wire retainer plus 12 months of repairs if required.
