How do braces work?
Braces work by applying gentle, continuous forces to the teeth over time, gradually guiding them into improved alignment. Each tooth is held in place by a ligament within the surrounding bone. When controlled pressure is applied, the bone around the tooth responds by remodelling — allowing the tooth to move safely into a new position.
Brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected by a special wire, which is periodically adjusted to deliver precise forces. Additional components such as elastics may be used to correct bite relationships between the upper and lower teeth.
Orthodontic treatment is a biological process, not just a mechanical one. This means movement occurs gradually and must be carefully controlled to ensure both effective and stable results while maintaining the health of the teeth and supporting structures.
Once treatment is complete, retainers are essential to hold the teeth in their new positions.
